Basic of footprinting

In this post i will show you the basic's of footprinting that you should do while hacking a network or website.

From the name it very much clear that Footprinting is the method of gathering all information about the victim computer system,the companies it belongs to and other useful information.

Now i will tell you some of the steps that hacker do to get the information.Their are many advanced methods also,I will tell you all about that in next post.In this post i am showing all basic.

1.Start with gathering information of the victim website.You have to look for emails and names. This information would come in hand if you were planning to attempt a social engineering attack against the website.

2. Next step is to get the IP address of the website.You get it very easily by going to
http://www.selfseo.com/find_ip_address_of_a_website.php
How you get ip their?
Just enter the website URL their and it will find out its IP address.It is the best and easy step to find the ip address  of the website.

3. Now you have to 'Ping the server' to see if it is up and running.As there is no point in trying to hack an offline server. Now go to
http://just-ping.com
and Insert the website name or IP address their.Hit “Ping” button now. If all packets went through, then the server is up.

4. Now you have to do a 'Whois lookup' on the website.For this go to
http://whois.domaintools.com
and put the target website url. You would see this site gives you a huge amount of information about that website.
You could see the e-mails, address, names, when the domain was created, when the domain expires, the domain name servers, and much more their.

5.Now you have to use google or other search engine to get website data.
Like you could search a website through Google by searching “site:www.thetargetsite.com”.Google now display all the pages related to that website.You could narrow down the number of results by adding a specific word after. For example you could search “site:www.thetargetsite.com email”. This will give you a list of several emails that are published on that website. Another search you have to do is “inurl:robots.txt" This would look for a page called robots.txt. If a site has the file “robots.txt”, it displays all the directories and pages on the website that you wish to keep anonymous from the search engine spiders.You might come across some valuable information that was meant to be kept private in this file.
